Mogadishu, 4 August 2026 – The Ministry of Health and Social Services of the Federal Government of Somalia today launched a workshop in Mogadishu to review and validate the National Healthcare Waste Management Guideline. The initiative aims to strengthen public health and safety, protect the environment, and improve practices for the safe and effective management of healthcare waste across the country.
The workshop was officially opened by the Director General of the Ministry of Health and Social Services, Mr. Yusuf Hassan Isaq. It was organized by the Ministry’s Department of Environmental Health and Climate Change and brought together government officials, health experts, representatives from healthcare facilities, and academic institutions.
Participants collaboratively reviewed the provisions of the National Healthcare Waste Management Guideline to ensure that it responds to the current needs of the health sector and is aligned with internationally recognized standards and best practices for healthcare waste management.
Throughout the workshop, discussions focused on establishing a unified national framework for the management of waste generated by healthcare facilities and ensuring that health facilities have clear and effective procedures to safeguard patients, healthcare workers, communities, and the environment.
Speaking at the official opening of the workshop, Director General Mr. Yusuf Hassan Isaq emphasized that the guideline represents an important step towards strengthening Somalia’s healthcare waste management system. He highlighted that its effective implementation will contribute to protecting public health, improving the safety of healthcare workers, and safeguarding the environment.
The Director General called on all relevant government institutions, healthcare facilities, academic institutions, and partners to work closely together to support the effective implementation and adoption of the National Healthcare Waste Management Guideline.
The Ministry of Health and Social Services reaffirms its commitment to strengthening environmental health systems and promoting safe, sustainable, and standardized healthcare waste management practices across Somalia.
